Congleton Res 2 - 2 Lostock Gralam

Lostock passed up the chance to take maximum points away from home with another afternoon of profligracy in front of goal. Lostock made a positive start to the game with Palmer and Butters carving plenty of chances to open the scoring but finding the ball rolling just the wrong side of the post on several occasions. The Grey Lambs were made to pay when a fortunate ricochet afforded Aston a snap shot from the edge of the area that flew inside the post. Congleton took heart from this and pressed on for the remainder of the half and were lucky not to be two up when Barlow cleared a header from a corner off the line.

Half Time 1 - 0

Lostock came out fired up for the second half and again went close with several chances before Butters latched onto a through ball and skipped past the keeper to turn into an empty net. Lostock were dominating affairs and the second came shortly afterwards Tomlinsons cross was handled in the box. Birdsey stepped up to convert the penalty, calmly sending the keeper the wrong way. The Grey Lambs missed more chances to make the game safe before a nerves began to set in. Bardsley took full advantage when he was allowed to travel too far in midfield and curled in a superb equaliser from 25 yards with 5 minutes to go. Lostock rallied and Sharples crashed a shot against the bar in the dying seconds in what was the last action of the game.

Malpas 3 - 3  Lostock Gralam

Lostock will feel hard done by after throwing another lead away and a chance to take maximum points. Lostock were the superior team despite not find top gear in the first half. Mike Butters gave Lostock the lead after the Maplas stopper made a great double save from Astbury and Birdsey.  The second followed shortly afterwards when Birdsey played in Barry down the right, and his cross was turned in from close range by Astbury. The Grey Lambs missed several other chances, but looked comfortable going into half time.

Half Time 0 - 2

Malpas didn't look a threat from open play but managed to claw their way back in when a free kick from a wide position missed everyone in the box to sneak in the far corner. Lostock's response was immediate as Palmer skipped through the Malpas defence to slot home from inside the area. Lostock couldn't quite find a way past the Malpas goalkeeper as he produced a series of good stops, and got his reward when two late set pieces paid dividends to draw Malpas level.

Final Score 3 - 3

Team - Bird, Horne, Rafferty, Bailey, Barlow, Wilding, Barry, Birdsey, Latham, Astbury, Butters. Subs - Crawford, Palmer, Sharples, Tomlinson.

 Match Report 1st November 2008

Lostock 0 - 3 Golbourne

Lostock crashed to a disappointing loss, clearly struggling to adapt to their temporary new home at Moss Farm. The game itself was bright and entertaining with both teams well organised and looking to play football. Lostock created several chances without testing the keeper, and were made to pay when they were caught in possesion in their own half and Golbourne quickly swept the ball home to open the scoring. Johnson and Johns linked well down the right to force a last gasp block in the 6 yard box, and Bailey rattled the outside of the post with a rasping drive from the edge of the area, but the visitors soon got a second when a quick throw got them behind the Lostock defence for a simple second.

Half Time 0 - 2

The Grey Lambs dominated the second half, but couldn't find the critical finish they needed. Johns brought an excellent save with a close range volley and Palmer forced an excellent low save from the edge of the area. Lostock continued to push and Bailey crashed a header against the post follwing a succession of free kicks and corner. It was looking like it wouldn't be Lostocks day when Palmer crashed another shot against the bar, and Golbourne added insult to injury with a late break to seal the game.

Maine Road Res 1 - 3 Lostock Gralam

Neil Bithells men recorded their second win on the road in a comprehensive display in Manchester. Lostock started the brightest of the two sides, with Butters breaking through the defence in the first minute only to see his effort saved. Palmer was next to test the keeper from the edge of the area before Johnson had a double effort stopped on the line to keep the scores level. Maine Road weathered the early storm to finish the half strongly, and some excellent football put through Onugha one on one, and he brought out an excellent save from Bird to keep the scores level at half time.

Half Time 0 - 0

Lostock stepped up a gear in the second half and got an early reward when Butters cut in from the left and found the bottom corner with a low curling drive. Palmer was quick to follow with the second when great build up play down the right picked him out in the box, and he quickly shifted the ball to create a yard of space before driving home. The Grey Lambs were bouyed by the goals and began to dominate the possesion and pace of the game, and more good work found Wilding in space 30 yards out and he unleashed a thunderous drive that crashed in off the crossbar to make it three. Maine Road got a late consolation with a close range free kick, but it was too late to make an impact.

Final Score 1 - 3

Team - Bird, R. Barlow, Rafferty, Bailey, Horne, Wilding, Johnson, Latham, N. Barlow, Palmer, Butters. Subs - Birdsey, Barry, Crawford.

Mid Cheshire District Cup

Lostock Gralam 10 - 1 Winnington Reserves

After recent problems in front of goal, Lostock put in a confident display to start the cup mini league in the right fashion. Despite a dominant opening period by Lostock, Winnington took a surprise lead when Shaun Bradley stole in behind the back four to slot home the opener. It looked as though it would be a difficult day as several chances went begging before Palmer smashed home from 20 yards to equalise. 3 goals in quick succession, including a Nicky Barlow brace, ensured the half time score line had a more respectable air…

Half Time 4 - 1

Lostock moved up a gear in the second half with debutant Liam Sharples taking centre stage, helping himself to 5 goals in a display of clinical finishing that had been lacking from the Grey Lambs game for several weeks. Dom Johns, just back from suspension, completed a polished second half performance from Lostock by slotting home the 10th just before full time.

Team - Bird, R. Barlow, Horne, Birdsey, Bailey, N. Barlow, Palmer, Johnson, Latham, Burns, Sharples. Subs - Collins, Johns, Wilding, Astbury.

Presidents Cup

Lostock 1 - 3 Denton Town

Lostock crashed to a disappointing defeat in the opening round of the cup against high flying Denton Town. The Grey Lambs dominated the opening period of the game, playing some fantastic football that Denton struggled to cope with. Wilding and Barry in the wide positions were getting good service and created chances that Johnson and Palmer came close to taking advantage of, and after 20 minutes Palmer opened the scoring with a close range header from a Latham free kick. Wilding had an excellent chance to make it two when put clear through, but the Denton stopper made an excellent save to keep his team in contention. A lack of concentration allowed Denton back in the game when a long throw into the box caused mass confusion, and Ellis drove home a half clearance from the edge of the box. Denton soon made it two when an offside decision wasn't given and Martins took his time to lob the ball over the advancing Bird in goal.

Half Time 1 - 2

Lostock came out eager to get back on level terms, but were dealt an early blow when another defensive mix up allowed Ellis in to fire home. This completely deflated a young Lostock side who never got back in the game after that, as Denton comfortably saw out the remainder of the game.

Full Time - 1 - 3

Team - Bird, Horne, Barlow, Birdsey, Bailey, Wilding, Barry (Burns), Latham (Collins), Palmer, Johnson, Rafferty (Sharples). Subs - Ince.

 Match Report - Saturday 27th September 2008

Broadheath 1 - 3 Lostock Gralam

Lostock returned to winning ways despite an unconvincing performance at Broadheath.

The Grey Lambs dominated the early exchanges but several players were guilty of missing good opportunities to at least test the keeper. The opener came after 25 minutes when good work from Barlow and Astbury put Anto Palmer in to neatly slot home from close range. Despite taking the lead, a dip in concentration led to a period of really poor spell for Lostock, and Broadheath took full advantage with a well worked move that saw Painter benefit from a quick one two around the box to finish calmly.

Half Time 1 - 1

There was a slight improvement in the second half as Lostock looked more dangerous going forward but still lacked any conviction in their play. Burns gave Lostock the lead when he was first to react to Palmers miscued shot on the hour to fire home from close range. Lostock almost threw the lead away again when Painter broke free in the box and lobbed the ball over the advancing Bird in goal, but Bailey saved the day with an acrobatic goal line clearance and Bird then produced an excellent stop from close range to keep Broadheath at bay. The game was eventually made safe when Burns took a quick free kick to release Birdsey, and his driven cross swerved into top corner to catch everybody, including the keeper, by surprise.  Lostock will need to improve on this performance, but can't complain about the points tally taken.

Team - Bird, Horne, Rafferty (R. Barlow), Bailey, Birdsey, N. Barlow (Ince), Palmer, Latham, Burns, Johnson, Astbury (Sharples). Subs - Wilding, Collins.

 Match Report - Saturday 20th September 2008

Lostock Gralam 0 - 0 Congleton Res

Lostock produced an extremely lacklustre display in what can only be viewed as a missed opportunity to take maximum points. A slow start led to Congleton dominating the early exchanges, with Lindon down the right a dangerous outlet who created several moments of panic with quality balls into the box. Lostock failed to respond until a shot from the edge of the area rattled the bar with 30 minutes gone. Lostock heeded the warning and gradually got a footing in the game, with Wilding almosts winning a penalty when cynically brought down on his way into the box and Barry having a legitimate goal disallowed for offside when following in on a goalkeeping error.

Half time 0 - 0

The second half was better for Lostock as they managed to string more passes together as the game slowed down in the heat. Despite better ball retention, chances were at a premium as quality in the final third dimished, and both sides finished the game looking unable to make a decisive change in the game to score a goal and take 3 points.

Team - Bird, Horne (N. Barlow), Rafferty, Bailey, R Barlow, Johnson, Palmer (Collins), Wilding, Latham, Astbury, Barry. Subs - Birdsey, Gunn.

 Match Report - Saturday 30th August 2008

Moore Utd 2 - 1 Lostock

Lostock came away with a disappointing defeat against league new boys Moore. It looked like a cricket score was on the cards the way Lostock started the game, going behind after just 5 minutes to an unchallenged shot from the edge of the area and escaping going further behind when Moore rattled the cross bar from close range. Once Lostock got a footing in the game, Barlow and Horne formed an excellent platform from full back, supplying quality ball into the midfield that completely turned the game in Lostocks favour. Wilding and Latham were the main beneficiaries as they stretched the Moore defence with quality delivery into the box, with Latham going close on two occasions when free in the box, and the lively Butters unlucky to see a superb  volley crash off the bar. Moore were desperate for half time to come, but with the last attack of the half, Wilding cut inside the full back and into the area where he was crudely brought down. Astbury stepped up to calmly slot home the penalty to level the scores at half time.

Half Time 1 - 1

The Grey Lambs started the second half as they ended the first, dominating possession and keeping the opposition penned back in their half. Mike Butters was a constant threat and he was brought down as he burst through the defence, but a poor advantage was played that allowed the Moore defence to regroup. Astbury also wasted a good opportunity to add to his tally as he shot weakly when through on goal. The missed chances came back to haunt Lostock as they gave away a free kick on the edge of their own area after failing to clear their lines, and the subsequent free kick was hammered home to give the home side the advantage. Moore settled for what they had and effectively closed the game out, leaving Lostock to rue their missed opportunities.

Neil Bithell - "In some ways, I'm pleased with the performance as once we settled, we played them off the park. What we need to do is start scoring more of the chances we're creating, otherwise well do nothing more than mid table and this team is better than that."

Team  - Bird, Barlow, Rafferty, Bailey, Horne, Wilding, Palmer, Johnson, Latham, Astbury, Butters. Subs - Gunn, Birdsey, Barry.

Albis MOM - Ryan Barlow

Daten 1 - 0 Lostock Gralam

Lostock incurred their first loss of the season, but it will be the nature of the performance that will hurt the most. The Grey Lambs dominated the opening 20 minutes but a mixture of good defending, missed opportunities  kept the home side in touch. As the half went on, Daten grew stronger and looked more threatening as the half came to a close despite neither side creating any real opportunities.

Half Time 0 - 0

The second half started at a slow pace with neither side looking like taking the initiative. Wilding came close to breaking the deadlock when Butters played him behind the defence, but too much time to consider taking a shot or rounding the keeper resulted in a defender nipping in to avert the danger. It was just before the hour mark when the inevitable happened and a loss of concentration saw Matthews streak clear and fire Daten into the lead. It took a while for Lostock to register that they had fallen behind, and they slowly started to press for an equaliser. Astbury and Rafferty drew excellent saves from set pieces and a Millington free kick was superbly beaten away as Datens keeper rose to the challenge. Poor finishing again played it's part as the game and the points slipped away.

Team - Bird, Barlow, Rafferty, Bailey, Horne, Palmer, Johnson, Latham, Wilding, Clarke, Butters.

Subs - Astbury, Gunn, Millington, Barlow, Barry, Birdsey, Collins.

Albis MOM - James Horne

 Match Report - 20th August 2008

Lostock Gralam 0 - 0 Whitchurch

There probably won't be a more eventful bore draw all season, as Lostock and Whitchurch shared the spoils in an open and entertaining mid weeker. The contrast in styles was apparent very early as Lostock looked to probe with the ball on the floor whilst Whitchurch took a more direct approach, and it was the visitors who drew the first of a series of excellent saves from Bird in Lostocks goal, as he got a strong hand low to his right to push a fizzer from 18 yards past the post. Butters and Barlow were lively down both wings and it was the latter who carved open Whitchurch down the right, laying on an opportunity for Astbury that he sliced over from close range. Whitchurch nearly took the lead just before the break when Bird could only tip another stinger in the air, but Barlow acrobatically cleared before the ball crossed the line.

Half Time 0 - 0

The second half was a frenetic affair that became more and more stretched with each passing minute.  Lostock looked far more fluent in their football, but when opportunities arose, they were wasteful and rarely tested the keeper. Whitchurch continued to play more directly, but consistently tested Bird in goal with longer range efforts from around the area. Barlow had the best chance of the game when put through on goal, but the keeper managed to save with his feet and both teams later escaped lightly when forwards were adjudged to have been brought down when bearing down on goal. With both teams pressing for the win, the game ended on a sour note when Butters was unfortunate to be sent off, but Lostock defended well to ensure they shared the points.

Team - Bird, R Barlow, Millington, Bailey, Horne, Butters, Palmer, Johnson, N Barlow, Astbury, Gunn. Subs - Clarke, Wilding, Birdsey, Rafferty, Latham, Barry, Collins.

Albis MOM - Shaun Bird

 Match Report - 16th August 2008

Lostock Gralam 4 - 2 Eagle Sports

Lostock made a winning start to their league campaign with a hard fought victory over Eagle Sports. The home side were the quickest to settle into their stride and new recruit Dom Johnson opened the scoring on his competitive debut with an excellent strike from Midfield. Not to be outdone, Gunn also opened his seasons account following good work from Butters down the left. Despite a confident start, Lostock became a little nervous as the half drew to a close, inviting pressure from the Warrington outfit who took full advantage to snatch a goal before the break.

Half Time 2 - 1

Eagle started the second half extremely brightly and they soon equalised and began to dominate affairs but a Lostock change saw Mike Clarke enter the fray and immeadiately scored to put Lostock 3 -2 up and Mike Butters sealed the game with an excellent solo effort with 10 minutes remaining.

Manager Neil Bithell Said "There were a lot of young lads out there today, but they've worked hard and really shown some bottle to get pegged back to 2 - 2 and then go and win the game. It's a good start and we'll get better from here"

Team - Bird, Horne, Bayley, Millington, R. Barlow, Butters, Palmer, Johnson, N Barlow, Gunn, Astbury. Subs - Wilding, Collins, Clarke, Barry.
